State visit welcome ceremony in New Delhi for the Prince Alois India visit

Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein begins a state visit to India on Sunday, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit runs from 25 to 28 October, and it is expected to deepen ties between the two countries.

Prince Alois is the acting head of state of the Principality of Liechtenstein. He will be accompanied by his spouse, Hereditary Princess Sophie, along with a high-level official delegation and a business delegation made up of top industry leaders.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced the visit on Saturday. During the visit, Prime Minister Modi and Prince Alois will hold bilateral talks on trade and investment, science, technology and innovation, and people-to-people exchanges. They will also exchange views on regional and global developments.

Talks at the top

The bilateral meeting is the centrepiece of the visit. Trade and investment will be high on the agenda, alongside science, technology and innovation, which both sides see as a growing area of cooperation.

The visit comes at a useful moment for that agenda. It follows the operationalisation of the India-European Free Trade Association Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement in 2025. Liechtenstein is a member of the European Free Trade Association, known as EFTA, alongside Iceland, Norway and Switzerland.

The ministry said the visit is expected to provide further impetus to the growing engagement between India and Liechtenstein, particularly since the trade agreement came into force. The business delegation travelling with Prince Alois underlines that point, bringing top industry leaders into direct contact with Indian counterparts.

Prince Alois will also meet President Droupadi Murmu, who will host an official banquet in his honour. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will call on the visiting dignitary during the visit.

The ministry said the visit will provide an opportunity to further deepen the friendly ties between India and Liechtenstein and build partnerships in new areas of mutual interest. That language points to a visit that is about future cooperation, not only ceremony.

A familiar visitor

This is not Prince Alois’s first trip to India. It is his second visit to India in 2026 alone. He visited New Delhi in February to attend the AI Impact Summit, where Prime Minister Modi held a bilateral meeting with him at Hyderabad House on the sidelines of the summit.

He had also visited India in 2010 and 2018. That history gives this state visit a sense of continuity, rather than a first introduction. The two sides already know each other, and the talks can start from shared ground.

India and the Principality of Liechtenstein established diplomatic relations in 1993. The Indian Ambassador to Switzerland is concurrently accredited as Ambassador to the Principality. The year 2023 marked the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest countries in Europe, landlocked between Switzerland and Austria, with a population of under 40,000 people. Its size makes the state visit all the more notable. A small country with a highly developed economy, known for finance, precision manufacturing and innovation, has much to offer in trade and technology, and much to gain from access to the Indian market.

For India, the visit fits a wider pattern of engagement with European partners after the EFTA trade agreement. The agreement opened new routes for trade and investment, and state visits like this one are where the detail of that cooperation gets worked out in practice.

What to watch

The talks on science, technology and innovation will be watched closely, given Prince Alois’s February visit for the AI Impact Summit. Artificial intelligence, research cooperation and technology transfer are natural areas for two countries that both invest heavily in high-value industries.

Trade and investment will also matter. The business delegation travelling with the prince is a sign that both sides want commercial results from the visit, not only diplomatic statements. Meetings between business leaders often produce the practical deals that follow a state visit.

People-to-people exchanges are on the agenda too, though they tend to move more slowly than trade. Student exchanges, cultural links and tourism all grow when the political relationship is warm, and this visit is meant to keep that warmth in place.

The visit runs until Tuesday, 28 October. By the time Prince Alois leaves, both sides will hope to have a clearer picture of where their partnership goes next, and a set of agreements or understandings to show for four days of talks.
