McRib returns to McDonald's in select US cities

McDonald’s is bringing back its McRib sandwich on Tuesday, 27 October, but fans across the United States will not find it at every restaurant. The fast food chain is bringing the sandwich back to select markets, so its return will depend on where customers live.

The McRib is one of the most famous limited-time items in fast food. It has built a cult following since it was first introduced in 1981, and its return each year has become an event for its fans.

This year the comeback is earlier than usual. Last year the McRib returned to some markets in mid-November, but this time it is arriving in late October, a few weeks ahead of schedule.

McDonald’s senior marketing officer Guillaume Huin confirmed the return on X, the social media platform. He said the McRib was the chain’s most-mentioned limited-time product online, ahead of any permanent menu item.

Only select cities

The sandwich will be available in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Dallas, according to USA Today. McDonald’s also confirmed it would be available in Cleveland, Seattle and St. Louis, and in Columbus, Ohio.

Customers are advised to check the McDonald’s app to see if the McRib is on the menu at a restaurant near them. Not every restaurant in the listed cities will carry the sandwich, and availability can vary by location.

Some locations may start selling the McRib earlier than Tuesday. Reports point to certain restaurants in Columbus, Ohio, offering it as early as Monday, 26 October, and the Pittsburgh area is also expected to get it early.

Fans have already been finding the sandwich in other places. The fan-run McRib Locator website has logged sightings this week in San Antonio, Charlotte, Kearney in Nebraska, Overland Park in Kansas, Oxford in Mississippi and parts of California.

McDonald’s has said more locations may be added to the rollout. The list of cities could change as the promotion goes on, so fans in other cities should keep checking the app.

Earlier than usual

The early return is a change from recent years. In late November 2024, McDonald’s brought the McRib back nationwide, but the 2025 return came in mid-November and only in some markets.

This year’s late-October return is the earliest in years. The timing also lines up with Halloween week, when McDonald’s is running its annual Monopoly promotion and bringing back its Boo Buckets for children.

The McRib first debuted in 1981, first offered as a limited-time item in Kansas City before expanding across the country. It was developed by Rene Arend, the chef from Luxembourg who also invented the Chicken McNugget in 1979.

The sandwich is made with a boneless pork patty covered in tangy barbecue sauce, topped with slivered onions and pickles on a hoagie-style bun. McDonald’s says it is made with 100 percent US pork.

A cult favourite

The McRib has developed a following that goes far beyond a normal sandwich. Fans track its return each year on the McRib Locator website, and its comings and goings are followed like a sports season.

McDonald’s leaned into that reputation during its 2022 Farewell Tour, presenting the promotion as another possible goodbye to the McRib. The company left the door open for another return, and the sandwich came back again.

The sandwich usually disappears within three to four weeks of its return. That short window is part of its appeal, and it has helped turn a simple pork sandwich into an annual event.

For fans in the ten confirmed cities, Tuesday is the day to check the app and head to the nearest McDonald’s. For everyone else, the wait goes on, and the McRib Locator will be the first place to look for news of a wider rollout.
